Closing the Bones Ceremony
Closing the bones is a traditional postpartum ceremony that has been practiced in central and south America and similarly around the world. The mother is massaged and steamed and wrapped to close the ceremony. There is a calling the spirit back to her self as she has been a portal for carrying new life, and has walked the threshold between worlds.
In traditional cultures, the 40 days of the postnatal period represent a sacred time.
In many cultures, there is a confinement period, a time when the new mother is looked after and nourished and helped to heal.
In Ecuador, women are given this massage within hours of the birth, and receive it again at least 5 or 6 times during the first 40 days postpartum. The massage stimulates blood flow which in turn; cleans, renews, moves fluids (it may also help with milk supply/lochia), moves hormones, stimulates the immune system, and helps tone muscles
Beyond the physical aspect of closing the bones, there is also a spiritual aspect to the treatment, which provides a safe space for the mother to feel nurtured and release emotions associated with the birth and motherhood. Having experienced receiving the ceremony myself and given it to new and not so new mothers, I have experienced and witnessed how powerful this ritual can be in releasing emotions in a safe way, even many years after the birth itself.
Having gone through a very difficult post partum phase I feel very passionate to share this with the world, I wish for every woman to have the opportunity to call her spirit home to be able to offer herself with a fuller cup.
“It is said that a birthing woman leaves her body, she must travel to the stars and back to collect the soul of her baby and return to this world ”
What types of healing modalities are used?
The ceremony begins in welcoming the mother and family. There will be a short introduction and an offering towards creating personal intention. In the tradition the mother will be offered an internal steam bath with flowers and herbs to bring heat or “chi” back into her body. She is kept warm and then escorted to her bed where she will be nurtured by healing hands.
A variety of healing modalities may be used involving massage, reiki, aromatherapy and sound healing. There will be a ‘closing’ done by gently wrapping the cranium, the midsection and the pelvic area, helping to facilitate shrinkage of the uterus guide the bones back to their original positioning. Once complete, she is allowed to lie quietly and integrate her experience.
This ritual requires 2 people, I have another woman who can come to assist , otherwise you choose a close female companion or relative to join in the ceremony and together, we become the women that “hold the space”.
The Closing of the Bones Ceremony is designed for mothers from 6 weeks postpartum and beyond. The ceremony is open to all mothers at any time who wish to find some closure for themselves and wish to take part. This can be a very powerful healing for miscarriage and abortion. I would be happy to support you with this ceremony .
